Individual Speaking Project: Medicine

Aim: to demonstrate a full command of the vocabulary on one chosen topic and educate the group about this topic in an engaging manner.

Desired result: a PPT presentation with images for visual support and a written text of the presentation (7 minutes).

Instruction:

1. Choose one of the following topics:

- the compulsory topics (someone in the group must choose them):

1) Annual medical checkups. What should be tested regularly to ensure long-term health?

2) Keeping a healthy heart. What can be done to prevent cardiovascular diseases?

3) Mental health and our nervous system. When do we need professional help?

4) Blood donation. Who can be a donor and why is it important?

5) Sleep, rest and stress. What are examples of healthy sleeping habits and what are the mechanics of sleep?

- extra topics:

6) Fitness and exercise. How can we keep our bodies strong and energetic?

7) Disabilities. How can people be respectful and helpful at the same time? What shall we do if we become disabled?

8) First aid. What can you do to help an injured person in the street?

9) Injuries and traumas. How can we prevent them?

10) Immunity. How do we keep our body strong? (Vaccination is included in this topic)

11) Cancer. What do we know about it and what can be done to help people who are diagnosed with it?

12) HIV and AIDS. How do people live with these diagnoses and how can we prevent the epidemic?

14) Aging. What is it and what can we do to slow this process?

15) World Health Organization. What does it do?

16) Weight management. What is healthy weight and what happens in our organism when we lose or gain weight fast?

17) Pregnancy: normal body changes and associated risks.

18) Stress: what it is, what it does to us and what risks it increases.

19) Mortality rates. Why people die and what medical expenses governments should cover to reduce mortality.

20) Domestic violence and bullying at schools: how to notice it and how to help people around us if we notice alarming signs.

2. Do thorough research on this topic in Russian or in English, whichever you prefer. At this stage you should make a draft of the information you want to present, and it should be factual, scientific, and useful.

3. Search for at least three good English sources of information. You start with Wikipedia and NHS (https://www.nhs.uk/). Other sources may be websites of volunteer organizations in this sphere, newspaper long-reads, TED lectures, blogs of scientists, activists, university professors and teachers, FAQ on websites of medical centres, etc. If you need help, feel free to ask your instructor.

4. Think about an engaging and energetic way to present your topic. You may choose a role for yourself (an elderly doctor, a fitness instructor, an Olympic champion, etc) and think about some proper setting (a talk on first aid before a hiking tour, a youtube video, etc.) Write your lecture and fill it with as much vocabulary as you can. Select some pictures to make it more engaging.

5. Get ready to present your topic in class. Check the pronunciation, double-check your grammar, rehearse your presentation. Perhaps, it will be necessary for you to learn it by heart.
