AT THE THEATRE
1. I’ll never forget my first visit to the Belarusian Opera and Ballet Theatre. My friend and I wanted to see the famous ballet Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky. We knew the plot very well. We also knew some pieces of music from this ballet (Small Swans’ Dance) and decided to see the whole performance.
2. We bought the tickets in advance and came to the theatre half an hour before the show. In the foyer we bought the programme. Such famous dancers as T. Yershova – international Competition Laureate, People’s Artist of the Republic of Belarus (as Zigfrid) were costarring in this ballet. The ballet is about the great love of Prince Zigfrid and a beautiful young girl Odetta by name.
3. At 7 sharp the performance began. From the very first minute I was deeply impressed by everything I saw on the stage. The setting and the dancing were superb and exciting. The costumes were fine, the music was thrilling. The ballet seemed to me a fairy-tale. I had never seen anything more wonderful before. My friend also enjoyed every minute of it.
4. After the first act we went to look over the theatre. We saw the boxes, the pit, the dress-circle and the gallery. There were many portraits of famous opera-singers, ballet-dancers, musicians and producers on the walls of the foyer. Among them we could see the portraits of A. Savchenko, R. Petrov, M. Gulegina, etc.
5. When the curtains fell at the end of the performance there came a storm of applause. It seemed that it would never end. The dancers received call after call. They were presented with large bouquets of flowers. We also applauded enthusiastically. The performance was a success.

WHO WAS COLUMBUS?
1. The discovery of America on October 12, 1492, is perhaps the most important single event in human history, and yet there are a great many unsolved problems about it. Let′s consider some of the questions which arise when we say that Christopher Columbus discovered America.
2. First, who was Columbus? His name is mysterious. It was not Columbus in his lifetime, but Colon, Colom, Colonus, or Colombo. He called himself, or was called, all five at different times. One set of documents says that he was a weaver and the son of a weaver at Genoa; but he himself talks of many years at sea and besides this his knowledge of seamanship must have been the result of long years’ experience.
3. Whatever the truth of his origin Columbus was without question an extremely remarkable man. He was a very practical sailor and was interested in mathematics, geography and astronomy, at least as far as they related to navigation. But he was also a dreamer, determined to make his dream, come true.
4. And what was his dream? The Portuguese had reached India by sailing east. They had discovered the whole west coast of Africa and rounded what we now call the Cape of Good Hope. Columbus believed that by sailing west he would reach India – which was the name for Asia generally. Columbus did reach land by sailing west by a much shorter route than the Portuguese, but he always thought that it was Asia. It is a strange thing, but Columbus was able to find his dream because he was wrong about the most important point. He knew that the earth was round and that therefore you could sail round it by traveling either east or west; but he mistakenly thought that this round ball was much smaller than it is.

1. The bourgeois world doesn’t often give its artists a good life. The greatest names are often connected with an unhappy life; sometimes the best work of the artist becomes well known only many years after his death.
2. Rembrandt was born at the beginning of the XVII century in a little town not far from the capital of Holland. His talent for art was seen when he was still a boy; and for a few years he studied a painting with well-known teachers of art.
3. Holland at that time was a rich country. Rich people wanted Rembrandt to paint their portraits and they paid him well for his work. But they wanted the portraits to show them not as they really were but as they wanted to be. Rembrandt refused to tell lies in his pictures. He could not change the hearts of people, and their hearts showed in their faces. When he painted a group picture of the most important rich men of Amsterdam, the picture made them angry. «We have given you enough money, – they said. – You have no right to make us worse than we are». «True, – Rembrandt answered. – But I cannot make you better either».
4. Time passed. Less people asked Rembrandt to paint their portraits, less people wanted to buy his pictures, less students came to him to study art. He became poorer, life became more difficult. His wife died, and he was alone. When he died, he did not leave enough money to bury him.
5. Many years passed before Rembrandt’s work was «discovered». But today, like the names of Tolstoi and Shakespeare in literature, the name of Rembrandt in art is known to everybody: he belongs not only to his own country, but to the whole world.
