Course Description

This course introduces you to the basic analytical skills in grammar necessary for the language study. It informs you about a set of rules that are important for speaking correctly and gives you enough practice to form a habit of using words and structures the right way. This semester we concentrate on nouns, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, articles, and some verbs. The course is built up as a “theory – reproduction – individual creative work – test” spiral and requires a lot of written work.

I allow students to miss one Grammar Thursday with ‘no questions asked’. If students miss more than one day their grade will be marked down. Only special circumstances that may force them not to attend will be seen as an excuse. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the professor and other students to make up lost work.

Late arrivals will be marked and influence your grade. Systematic tardiness may fail your attendance and class performance results. I do encourage you to be considerate of your fellow students and be respectful.

Class Performance

It is the measure of your efficiency while doing the routine work that includes a) oral answers about the information we learn; b) written exercises to apply that information. Basically, you get a good result here if you do all the homework responsibly, with a few or no mistakes, learn the new information and understand it well. I value your good understanding more than your exact reproduction of some paragraphs in the textbook.

Individual Work

We are going to do two main types of individual work in this class.

a) Individual examples. All the grammatical phenomena, constructions, exceptions, etc. need to be illustrated. I expect you to create your own examples every time we are studying some new topic for your own use and better memorization, but we will also make cards with these examples to check each other and have additional practice. On the one side of the card you write your sentences in Russian, on the other side you write their translation into English. In both variants you underline the active material. You may type and print your card, or write it by hand. Your handwriting must be easily read by all the students in the group.

b) Dialogues. We will make average-length dialogues for the sake of practice. While making a dialogue you are supposed to use as many sentences with the construction or phenomenon we practise as possible. After that you learn it by heart and tell it in class. To save time, we will not switch the parts when telling the dialogue. This is partner work, and your individual contribution to it should be equal from both the partners.

Grammar Dictionary

This is a small copybook where you write down new words referring to Grammar, such as terms and all the words you need to tell about grammatical phenomena. You divide your space into three columns – “Word”, “Definition”, and “Example”. If necessary, you may write the transcription of the word in the first column as well. You must keep this dictionary and write down new entries every week. By mid-December there should be at least 150 entries in your dictionary. We are going to have 15 Thursdays, so it means that you should write 10 entries a week. You submit your dictionary before December, 15. I give it back to you during the last week of December.

Written Tests

Every topic is completed by a test. A test may contain two-way translation, matching, choosing a variant, inserting a preposition, sorting the given words into categories, defining members of the sentence, parts of speech or types of sentences. After you get the graded work back, you must do the correction work.


The final exam is scheduled for January; the requirements are specified a month before. Generally, the exam will include a card with a practical task, and a topic to tell everything you know about it.

As usual, your work during the semester is very important and the exam we have is the proof of the result you have shown during the semester.

Collaboration and Plagiarism

Students are allowed and encouraged to collaborate in their assignments with other students. They are welcome to discuss ideas, tasks and readings, but they are required to write on their own. Free-writing works will be checked by special software that finds correlation between the text and the Internet resources.

Please be respectful of copyright and do not use the illegally distributed resources in your work.

All the students are required to have access to the Web and check their e-mails daily. I will send some tasks and updates by e-mail, and I may also provide some interesting links for your consideration from time to time. All the questions and problems may be asked and solved online no later than one full day before the class.

Religious Holidays

Please inform me as soon as possible if you will not be able to submit a paper or take a scheduled test due to an official religious holiday so we can figure out an alternative schedule for completion of these assignments.

Environment-friendly Studying

I do encourage my students to be economical with resources and waste less paper. That is why I will distribute most of the materials we need for reading electronically. Unfortunately, the things we need in class have to be printed out for individual marks.
